MERCERSBURG, Pa. - A Mercersburg man shot and killed his estranged wife and then committed suicide outside a Peters Township home Wednesday afternoon, Pennsylvania State Police in Chambersburg said.

Leon F. Carbaugh Sr., 46, of 2271 Mountain Road, and Pamela K. Carbaugh, 47, of 5 S. Main St., were both pronounced dead at the scene, Franklin County Coroner Kenneth L. Peiffer Jr. said Wednesday night.

The couple was separated, Peiffer said.

Leon Carbaugh arrived at 12586 Orchard Circle, in Peters Township, about 4:25 p.m. and Pamela Carbaugh arrived about five minutes later, police said.

The couple was outside the home at about 4:35 p.m. when Leon Carbaugh took a revolver from his coat and shot Pamela Carbaugh twice, police said. He then took his own life.

Pamela Carbaugh was shot in the head and chest and Leon Carbaugh was shot in the head, Peiffer said.

Peiffer would not comment on why the couple was at the Orchard Circle location.

No further information was available from police Wednesday night.
