MIAMI - Hagerstown Junior College volleyball coach Marlys Palmer's voice cracked Tuesday while reporting the Hawks' 15-9, 15-11, 15-7 loss to Hill (Texas) College.
"It's hard to convey how unbelievably hard this team performed," Palmer said after HJC finished 0-9 at the National Junior College volleyball championships. "It's hard in sports. We're sitting here 0-9 and all I can tell the team was sometimes you play well and lose and other times you play badly and win."
HJC played for pride in the final match of pool play and extended Hill to the limit. Toni Martin keyed the Hawks with 18 digs. Heather Aleshire and Eleanor Baker collected 11 kills each. Julie Frazee had 32 assists and five kills.
"Our goal today was to delay the tournament as long as possible," Palmer said. "On Monday, a lot of the matches were getting done while we were still playing our first game. I got so many compliments on how gritty and how much heart this team had."
