A West End neighborhood besieged by noise, vandalism and harassment by loitering youths will get more police coverage, police and city officials promised Monday night at a Neighborhood Watch meeting.

But it probably won't be the three full-time officers requested in a petition signed by 156 neighborhood residents, said Hagerstown Police Chief Dale Jones and City Administrator Bruce Zimmerman.

"We will have some additional coverage for you," Zimmerman said. "At this point, we can't commit to three officers."

Jones and Zimmerman said they'll look into the situation this week to see just how much additional coverage could be provided and what other tactics the police department could use to deal with the problems.

More than two dozen people attended the meeting, held at the Salvation Army on Franklin and Wise streets.
