Local cancer survivors slated for ABC show

November 15, 1996

Three local cancer survivors will appear on ABC's "Good Morning America" this Sunday to voice their strong opposition to recent calls for same-day mastectomies.

A number of managed health care organizations have advocated same-day procedures as a way to keep health costs down. Some doctors have said the procedure can now be done safely in a single day.

But Hagerstown residents Sunny England, Quincy Kohler and Nancy Younker, all members of a cancer support group, say that is simply too little time.

"We said that we thought it was not a good idea, both medically and emotionally," England said. "It's very traumatic. It's a mutilation."

The women, members of the 7-year-old Y-ME of the Cumberland Valley, were interviewed at England's home on Wednesday.

The group, a chapter of the national Y-ME organization based in Chicago, sponsors support sessions on the first and fourth Monday of each month at the John Marsh Cancer Center.

"Good Morning America" can be seen this Sunday at 8 a.m. on Channel 2 and 10 a.m. on Channel 7.
